TAYLOR, Thomas (1758 - 1835). The Works of Plato. London: Printed for Thomas Taylor by R. Wilkes, 1804. 5 volumes. 4to (285 x 230 mm). Contemporary calf, covers triple-ruled in gilt, spines tooled and lettered in gilt with red and black morocco lettering labels, 5 raised bands. Condition: some hinges cracked, bindings worn with some loss. the first complete edition of taylor's translation of plato. Thomas Taylor, and important translator and neo-platonist, was the first to translate the works of Plato into english. While many of the manuscripts used to translate the works were interrupted by lacunae, Taylor's ammendments were proved correct when later manuscripts were found. Taylor and his wife welcomed a young Mary Wollstonecraft into their home, then an unhappy teenager escaping a violent home, and became a positive influence in that future author's life. As assistant Secretary to the Society for the Encouragement of Art, Taylor made many wealthy and influential friends who supported his mission of translating the important Greek philosophers.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
