ANSON, George, Baron (1697 - 1762). A Voyage Round the World in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. London: Printed for the Author by John and Paul Knapton, 1748. 4 volumes, 4to (285 x 235 mm). Engraved world map and 42 plates, maps and charts (many double-page or folding), subscriber's list and bookbinder's instructions. Contemporary calf rebacked preserving much of original spine, boards ruled in gilt, spine tooled and lettered in gilt with 5 raised bands, red morocco lettering label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges stained red. Condition: a few plates trimmed close at right margin; light rubbing to spine. first edition; a wide margined and clean copy. While at war with Spain in 1740, Anson led a squadron of eight ships to encounter and disrupt the Spanish fleet in the Pacific. The British were successful in the attacks on the Spanish however as a result of disease, severe weather, and the numerous military engagements, only one ship, the Centurian, completed the circumnavigation of the world.
