HELICOPTER ARCHIVE Archive of press and publicity photographs depicting various helicopters, including those of Emile Berliner and Igor Sikorsky. [Various places] c. 1908 - 1950. The Archive consists of 45 photographs (various sizes, largest 410 x 505 mm). Many marked on verso with the stamps, wire stories and newspaper clippings of various wire and news agencies in Paris, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, Washington D. C., Bridgeport, Stratford and East Hartford, Connecticut. an interesting photographic archive presenting the development of the helicopter in america and paris in the first half of the 20th century. The earliest photograph, stamped "Charles Dollfus...Paris" is dated 1908 in pencil and depicts and an aviator called Kimball demonstrating the motor of his rudimentary machine. Other photographs depict aviators: Paul Cornu, C. E. Faulkner, Stanley Hiller and his "Hillercopter," Pescara, James G. Ray, Harold F. Pitcairn, Emile Berliner(?), Johnny Miller, Chance-Vaught Aircraft, and Igor Sigorsky. Of particular interest are two photographs, both dated June 1922, which depict the helicopter of Emile Berliner. The newswire caption on one reads "American Helicopter Completes First Official Flight." Several photographs depict the designs of Igor Sikorsky, including one notable newswire photo of Sigorsky himself at the helm. The caption reads "Sigorsky, aeronautic engineer, yesterday demonstrated his new helicopter plane which he says may displace parachute troops. The plane, reminiscent of the early Wright Brothers' plane at Kitty Hawk, Rose, descended, turned and moved forward at Sikorsky's will."ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
