[N.p.:] c. 1840-1860. Watercolor on paper (195 x 390 mm). Signed "Edward Lear" in an unknown hand on verso. Condition: a long pencil mark on the verso is visible in the sky. Reminiscent of Lear's Italian and Grecian views, this watercolor depicts several figures near a large monument and the gates of a boating dock. The sails of several boats catch the daylight as do the domes and walls of the buildings in the town and the entire scene is framed by several tall mountains.
