LEAR, Edward (1812-1888). Views in the Seven Ionian Islands. London: Published by Edward Lear, December 1st, 1863. Folio (495 x 335 mm). Lithographic title and 20 color lithographs by Lear and Day & Son, each with accompanying text, list of subcribers at end. Original pebbled green cloth lettered in gilt and ruled in blind over a modern backstrip, original endpapers, tissue guards. Condition: repairs to final leaf, short marginal tear to title, some light browning; repairs to covers, hinges strengthened. first edition with stunning color plates. Lear knew the island of Corfu very well having lived there for several years during the 1850s and early 1860s. He devoted 9 plates to the island in this book, which was published to coincide with Great Britain's handover of the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1863.
