STRAUSS, Richard (1864 - 1949). Autograph letter signed to Hugo Burghauser regarding musical scores and life under the American regime. Montreux: [c. 1948]. 1 p. manuscript letter in German, written on the stationery of the Montreux-Palace Hotel (180 x 135 mm). With the original envelope stamped by Strauss on verso. Mounted into blue morocco folding case, lined with blue velvet. Condition: usual fold with very short tear. In this letter written to his old friend a year before his death, Strauss discusses his manuscripts of Don Juan and the transcription of the manuscript of the Rosenkavalier Waltzes for the singer Maria Jeritza. Strauss also mentions the difficulty in collecting royalties since 1939 and his house in Garmisch since the American occupation. Hugo Burghauser, up unto 1938 President of the Vienna Philharmonic, and its principal bassoonist, worked with Strauss many times in Vienna before the war. Hugo was removed from his job in 1938 after refusing to dismiss the Jewish members of his orchestra, and with his Jewish wife escaped via Paris to Canada in 1939. Strauss dedicated his Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon to Hugo. [With:] Signed photograph. Montreux: 15 October [19]48. Black and white photo depicting Strauss as conductor, inscribed on verso to Hugo Burghauser (85 x 135 mm). Mounted as above. Condition: light wear.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
