Contemporary American calf with black lettering labels and gilt ruling to spine. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell case. Condition: hinges cracked, front endpaper to vol. II detached but present, title pages with slight offsetting from former booklabel, title of vol. II slightly soiled with a few small repairs to preliminaries, intermittent browning; light wear to joints and spine tips. first edition, first state of fenimore cooper's masterpiece of american literature. With the following issue points: Vol. I pagination is present on page 71, page 89 is misnumbered 93, chapter XVI is misnumbered XIV, and on page vii the final "i" is present; In Vol. II the fifth line of the copyright page reads "a Book." The Last of the Mohicans is the most famous of Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, a series of novels devoted to the adventures of Native Americans, white pioneers and heroines. Set in a British province of New York during the French and Indian War, the focus of the novel is a Huron massacre and the rescue of two daughters of the British commander by the last two Mohicans.
