DREISER, Theodore (1871-1945). ' An American Tragedy.
New York: Boni and Liveright, 1925. 2 volumes., 8vo. Original brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind, slipcase to each volume. Condition: volume two front endpaper offset, book store labels on rear pastedowns; spine title rubbed; spine ends frayed. Provenance: George Wilder (presentation inscription from the author) presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper of volume one: From his some time editor to his some time chief Theodore Dreiser to George W. Wilder with all good wishes New York-April-1926. George W. Wilder, President of the Butterick Publishing Company which specialized in dress patterns and women's fashion magazines, hired Dreiser to be his chief editor in 1907, a position he held fore the follwing three years. Their friendship outlasted his short-lived career, as evidenced by this inscription made 16 years afterwards. First edition, trade issue, second printing. McDonald 18A; Orton 34.
