New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1943. 8vo. Original black cloth with gilt spine title in first issue dust jacket designed by E. McKnight Kauffer. Condition: spot of rubbing to spine gilt, rear panel of jacket lightly sunned, tiny closed edge tear along bottom edge of front panel. the scarce first edition issued to preserve copyright, one of only 788 copies total. The lack of skilled printers available during the war led to the initial print run being recalled and destroyed, except for 788 copies released for review and to secure copyright. The present copystates "first American edition" on the verso of title. Gallup A44.
