EMERSON, Ralph Waldo (1803-1882). Poems.
London: Chapman Brothers, 1847. 12mo (190 x 115 mm). Original gilt and blind-stamped green cloth. Condition: shaken, minor scattered faint spotting to a few leaves; spine darkened and chipped at head. Provenance: Charles Lane, presentation from the author. presentation copy from emerson to fellow transcendentalist charles lane. On the verso of the title page Lane has recorded "Charles Lane/from/the author." Charles Lane (1800-1870) was a founder, along with Amos Bronson Alcott, of Fruitlands, a Utopian farm (though no meat was eaten and no animal labor used) which sought to follow Transcendentalist ideals. A short-lived experiment, it was nevertheless one of the first American communes. He wrote a number of reviews for "The Dial", the short-lived magazine put out by the Transcendentalist Club that was edited in part by Emerson. BAL 5210
