HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Across the River and into the Trees. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1950. 8vo. "Explanatory note" tipped in at rear. Original dark blue gilt-stamped cloth, in custom case. Condition: tiny spot on upper edge, else a fine copy. one of 24 "advance copies" from the first 24 sheets run with errors, this copy with a note from Charles Scribner. A true rarity in the Hemingway canon, Hanneman records that 25 copies of the present were produced from the first sets of sheets printed, making such a limited edition was the idea of David Randall. Apparently, these copies have a pencilled note from Randall listing two of the corrections that denote the advance sheets from the first trade. This copy lacks any notes from Randall, but does have a mimeograph of the corrections tipped in at rear, with a pencilled holograph explanation from Charles Scribner: "This is one of 24 copies, bound in a different cloth from the regular edition and has the above errors in the pages which were caught & corrected after 24 sheets had been run. Hemingway and I have given these 24 copies to friends - none were sold - Charles Scribner." Hanneman A23 (note, calling for 25 copies). ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
