IRVING, Washington (1783-1859). Salmagundi; or the Whim-Whams and Opinions of Launcelot Langstaff. New York: David. Longworth, 1807 - 1808. 20 original parts, disbound, each loose in a paper wrapper. 12mo (each 140 x 90 mm). Housed in a half blue morocco slipcase. Condition: disbound, some leaves loose, creased and chipped. Provenance: A. Heard (ownership signature to title); John D. Andrews (ownership signature to title). rare group of mainly first editions of washington irving's first original work. While volumes 1-3 are provided from the second and third editions, volumes 4-20 are otherwise all first editions in mixed states. As Salmagundi is one of the most bibliographically complicated works in American literature, a complete run with such an extensive run of first editions is quite uncommon. The BAL itself notes, "with so comparatively few copies to work with ... anything remotely resembling finality is impossible." This collection also includes the scarce title pages for both volumes and the frontispiece portrait of Langstaff in volume 8. BAL 10097.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
