London: Methuen & Co., 1903. 8vo (185 x 115 mm). 8 line manuscript poem to verso of half-title, each volume signed on title page. Half red morocco over red boards by Truslove & Hanson, spines stamped and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. Condition: light foxing; light wear to extremities. Provenance: Sir Lewis Michell (bookplates). [Identically bound with:] Captains Courageous. London: Macmillin and Co., 1902; and Wee Willie Winkie. London: Macmillin and Co., 1901. both signed by kipling. the 8 line manuscript poem, a verse from his 1894 The Native-Born, is written in kipling's hand. It reads as follows: To the home of the Floods & Thunder- To her pale dry healing blue- To the lift of the great Cape combers And the smell the baked Karroo! To the growl of the sluicing stamp head To the reef & water gold- To the last and the largest Empire To the map that is half unrolled!
