LEAR, Edward (1812-1888), Alfred, Lord TENNYSON (1809-1892), and Edward RIMBAULT (1816-1876) Poems and Songs by Alfred Tennyson, Set to Music and Inscribed to Mrs. Alfred Tennyson by Edward Lear. No. 1[-12]. London: Cramer, Beale & Chappell, [n.d. but circa 1859-1860]. 12 works in one volume, folio (340 x 255 mm). 12 lithographic titles, 12 sets of sheet music (nine of these sets lithographed and with sheets numbered from '6983'-'6991', three engraved and with sheets numbered from 'A1322'-'A1324'). Contemporary dark blue morocco-backed blue paper-covered boards with cloth tips, the upper cover lettered in gilt 'Poems and Songs / y / Alfred Tennyson / music by / Edward Lear / arranged by / Dr. E. Rimbault'. Condition: light spotting to titles, the first title and the last leaf browned; binding rubbed and cracked, free endpapers creased and loosely inserted. Provenance: Dr. E. Rimbault (binding). very rare: a complete set of the selections from tennyson that were set to music by lear, with each of the 12 titles inscribed by lear for the (apparently unacknowlegded) third person involved in the project. Each title page is signed either "Edward Lear 1871" (nos.1 and 2) or "Edward Lear, Sanremo 1871." (nos.3-12). It appears that Lear signed each of the parts at the request of the man who [re]arranged his music into a form that was publishable. The involvment of the notable English organist and author of several musical works, Dr. Edward Francis Rimbault (1816-1876), is not acknowledged on any of the title pages. The final three parts seem to be particularly rare - they are not listed on OCLC, but they do appear in Jerome V. Reel's "The Music of Arthur: A Listing" ( see "www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/acpbibs/reel.htm").ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
