London & New York: Boussod, Valadon & Co. and Scribner & Welford, 1889. 4to (313 x 245 mm). Portrait frontispiece of Tennyson after G.F. Watts, 16 plates after Lear, 7 head- and tail-pieces (including a portrait of Lear), all "Goupil gravures", each image protected by a tissue guard printed in letterpress with text giving some details of the image. Publisher's brown half-morocco over brown cloth-covered boards, the upper cover lettered in gilt "To E.L.", the flat spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g. Condition: some light thumbsoiling; binding bumped, lower cover with two tears though the board and some surface scuffing. rare: limited edition of 100 proof copies signed "for the sake of my old friend edward lear" by tennyson, this copy numbered 80. During his lifetime Lear had executed hundreds of drawings inspired by Tennyson's poetry which he admired greatly. Lear died in January 1888, and the present work was evidently intended as a memorial to both his art and his friendship with the Poet Laureate: it is illustrated with a selection reproducing 22 of his Tennyson-inspired watercolor landscapes of Europe and the Near East.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
