York Harbor: 22 August 1902. 2 sheet manuscript letter written on tan paper with two ledger holes at head (225 x 140 mm). Signed at foot of first sheet with postscript to second. Condition: slight offset to first page, usual folds, second sheet with small portion of upper margin cut away. before the first stage production of Huckleberry Finn, Twain cares for his ailing wife. Charles B. Dillingham was the producer of the upcoming stage version of Twain's famous novel, but the author was unable to contribute much because of his wife, Olivia's, failing health. Twain begins, "The play came, but before I could snatch a look at it Mrs. Clemens was prostrated with a so serious illness that I have been a sick-nurse ever since ..." He goes on to mention the producer, Erlanger, and the novel's adaptor, the playwright Lee Arthur, whom he owes a letter but sadly, "I seldom get a chance to write one, these days. Sincerely yours, S. L. Clemens."
