GARFIELD, James A. Autograph letter signed to Major General Gordon Granger, relaying orders to push back the Confederate picket line at Triune, Tennessee. Murfreesboro: 11 June 1863, "9 p.m." 1 p., single sheet (250 x 200 mm). head-Quarters, Department of the Cumberland." Marked at the top in Garfield's hand "By Signal Corps." Condition: usual folds. garfield issues rosencrans's orders at the start of the tullahoma campaign. At the time of these orders, Garfield was serving as the Chief of Staff under General William S. Rosencrans. The Army of the Cumberland had remained entrenched at Murfreesboro throughout the winter and into the spring. After much pressure to advance on Bragg's Confederate forces, Rosencrans began the Tullahoma Campaign, which although successfully pushed Bragg our of middle Tennessee, would eventually end with Union defeat at Chickamaugua. Garfield writes: "The General Commanding has determined to push back the enemy's outposts and pickets and keep them further away from our front. He therefore directs you to drive the rebel pickets well back from your front and also find our where Forest [i.e. Nathaniel Bedford Forrest] is.
