AMERICAN REVOLUTION -- Arthur LEE. Autograph letter signed, to H. W. Stockton, written while serving as the US commissioner to France during the Revolution. Paris: 10 June 1779. 1? pp., folded sheet with integral blank (230 x 190 mm). Docketed on the final page. Condition: usual folds. Arthur Lee (1740-1792) served as an American diplomat during the Revolution, including as a commissioner in Paris with Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane. Lee writes to Stockton concerning the accounts of a printer, writing "there is some malice in the business & that he knows it, otherwise he would have given this account at first, which wd have prevented any farther enquiry." The letter next turns to patriot Stephen Sayre, who had been arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London at the start of the war. "You mentioned Mr. Sayre's arrival. I should be glad to hear where he ahs been, what accounts he gives of things in the north and what are his views." The letter closes offering a letter of introduction to William Fitzhugh of Maryland.
