AMERICAN REVOLUTION -- Thomas PAINE. Common Sense Addressed to the Inhabitants of America ... A New Edition, with several Additions in the Body of the Work. Philadelphia: W. and T. Bradford, 1776. 99 pp, 8vo (195 x 120 mm). Lacks the half-title. Later half morocco over marbled paper boards. Condition: front hinge a bit loose, age toning at edges; minor wear. Provenance: gift inscription on the front free endpaper. philadelphia 1776 edition of common sense -- the most influential american tract of the revolutionary movement for independence. The "New Edition" published by Bradford is notable for the postscript following the introduction: "The publication of this new Edition hath been delayed, with a view of the taking notice (had it been necessary) of any Attempt to refute the Doctrine of Independance [sic]: As no Answer hath yet appeared, it is now presumed that none will, the Time needful for getting such a Performance ready for the Public being considerably past." This, the second Bradford 99-page edition, includes Paine's Appendix and his Address to the People Called Quakers. All Philadelphia 1776 editions have become scarce on the market.
