AMERICAN REVOLUTION -- Louis-Philippe de Rigaud, Marquis de VAUDREUIL. Autograph letter signed to the Spanish governor of Cuba, Lieutenant-General Juan Manuel Cajigal y Monseratte, concerning an escort for a U.S. ship. "A Bord du Triomphant au Cap [François, Haiti]": 23 June 1782. 1p., folded sheet with integral blank (242 x 182 mm). Condition: old folds, two small holes. Following Admiral Rodney's rout of Admiral de Grasse, de Vaudreuil assumed command of the reduced French fleet, taking le Triomphant as his flagship and regrouping at Haiti. The Congress had requested an escort for the George Washington because the US Corvette was to be sent on an important mission to Cuba to raise much-needed funds to support the American war effort. With this letter, de Vaudreuil informs the governor that "M. de Tilly" (the son of Admiral de Grasse) has been appointed to escort the U.S. ship.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
