Illustrated with 48 original pen-and-ink and/or watercolor drawings on card mounted into the album on recto only, depicting camp life, animals, landscapes and views, plus 9 original photographic prints laid in or mounted to leaves. Provenance: John Robie Bowick (later manuscript note laid in). an english party hunts the northwest coast and visits the mormon temple at salt lake city. Thomas Gilbert Bowick, apparently an Englishman who was part owner with his brother John Robie Bowick of the Eastern Oregon Gold Mining Company, was the artist of these views, each of which is signed with his monogram. The album includes sketches and photos made during a year-long hunting expedition up to Alaska, with the majority of the album dedicated to that region. Bowick was an accomplished amateur artist and included are views in and around Juneau, Sitka, Muir Glacier and Glacier Bay, the salmon fishery of Killisnoo and Port Wrangle. Also shown are whale and wolf totems, an Indian village at Juneau, the interior of an Indian dwelling and of course various game animals. Photographs, many of which have been considerably enhanced with painted additions, include a hunting cabin in Oregon's Blue Mountains, and redwoods in California. A small manuscript map on the verso of the title, shows that the group proceeded overland from Washington and stopped in Salt Lake City (with exterior and interior views of the Mormon Temple included). The journey as a whole must have been a successful adventure as a list of game taken includes 26 bear (one grizzly, 1,800 lbs., shot 40 miles north of Ogden, Utah as recorded beneath a sketch of the animal), 28 deer as well as a variety of small game. a wonderful illustrated alaskan sporting journal.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
