BRESSANI, Francesco. Breve Relatione d'Alcune Missioni de' P.P. della Compagnia di Giesł nella Nuiua Francia.
Macerata: Heredi d'Agostino Grisei, 1653. iv, 127 pp., small 4to (200 x 140 mm). Woodcut device on title. Modern tooled morocco. Condition: slight worming, minor foxing and staining; covers slightly bowed. rare account of a jesuit missionionary among the hurons in canada. "The writer was an Italian Jesuit missionary. After spending two years with the Indians near Quebec, he was sent in 1644 to the Hurons" (Church). The relation includes a history of the founding of New France, observations on the customs of the Hurons and information on the founding of the missions. During his time in Canada, Bressani was taken captive by the Iroquois and the work includes his captivity account, as well as a detailed description of the destruction of the missions and his being tortured. Although not part of the Paris series of Jesuit relations, his description of the mission is considered the best contempoary account of the Hurons.
