BROADSIDE. Funeral Thoughts, Excited by the Death of John Adams and Thos. Jefferson, on the Fourth of July 1826. Boston: Howe & Norton, Printers, [1826]. Letterpress broadside (470 x 285 mm). Text in two columns within a woodcut border. Condition: two-inch tear at left margin across border, fold creases. a rare broadside issued following the deaths of john adams and thomas jefferson on the same day. On July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of American Independence, John Adams uttered his famous final words from his deathbed, "Thomas Jefferson survives." Jefferson, however, had died just hours earlier. Their deaths and apotheosis stirred a renewed interest in the American founding during the antebellum period and the words of the Declaration took on new meaning in the anti-slavery movement.
