ELECTION OF 1828 -- [James AKIN]. The Pedlar and his Pack or the Desperate Effort, an Over Balance. [Philadelphia: 1828]. Aquatint and engraving (245 x 360 mm). Nicely framed. american political caricature concerning the 1828 presidential election. This interesting cartoon satirizing the paradoxical effects of the negative campaign attacks on Andrew Jackson, i.e the famous coffin broadsides and handbills. The cartoon depicts John Binns, the Philadelphia newspaper editor largely behind the smear campaign, being crushed by the weight of his coffins, with the other candidates, Henry Clay and incumbent John Quincy Adams (holding the Presidential chair), perched precariously atop them. This copy a rare uncolored example. Reilly, American Political Prints 1828-3; Weitenkampf, p 21. Not in Murrell, A History of American Graphic Humor.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
