LINCOLN, Abraham. Partly-printed vellum document signed, as President, appointing David Kindleberger a Surgeon in the Navy. Washington: 19 February 1863. 1 p. (450 x 373 mm). Countersigned by Gideon Welles, orange paper-covered seal intact. Condition: usual folds. lincoln appoints a surgeon in the u.s. navy. During the Civil War, Kindleberger served as surgeon aboard ships in both the North Atlantic and the West Gulf Blockading Squadrons, seeing action at Port Hudson and Donaldsonville. On this commission, it appears that Lincoln was having trouble with his pen: following the initial two letters there appears to be a portion scratched off the vellum; Lincoln's signature then continues in a darker ink.
