LOUGHBOROUGH, J[ohn]. The Pacific Telegraph and Railway. Saint Louis: Charles & Hammond, 1849. 8vo (202 x 45 mm). Two lithographed folding maps. Modern calf-backed marbled paper boards. Condition: foxing. Provenance: W. H. B. Thomas (signature on title). a pacific railroad rarity. A very rare work and among the earliest on the Pacific Railway. Loughborough, a Missouri lawyer, undertook a personal exploration across the Plains in search of a route. He here presents his findings, the most extensive on the overland railroad to date, to the St. Louis Railroad Convention. This copy with the preliminary 20 pages apparently not found in all. The large two-sheet map in the rear, drawn and lithographed by Julius Hutawa, depicts the entire continental U.S. and shows the various contemplated routes through the Rocky Mountains, as well as a southern route. Copies complete with both maps are quite rare, with none in the famed Western Americana collections of Thomas Streeter or W. J. Holliday. Apparently, the work was unknown to Henry Wagner and Charles Camp and is not listed in the definitive The Plains & the Rockies. Cowan, p. 397; Graff 2536 (without the preliminary 20 pp.); Howes L489 "c"; Sabin 42167; Wheat, TMW 261.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
