MONROE, James. Letter signed, as President, to an unnamed recipient, authorizing a payment from the U.S. Agent at Bogota to Thomas Todd.
Washington: 16 June 1823. ? p., folded sheet with integral blank. Condition: minor toning. This letter is in response to one written by Todd to Monroe dated 29 May 1823 in which he requests the authority to draw on a draft on the State Department sent to him by his son, the U.S. Agent at Bogota. Monroe responds: "I authorize a Requisition on the Treasury for Fifteen hundred Dollars in payment of a Draft on the Department of State, drawn by C. S. Todd U. States Agent at Bogota in favour of Thomas Todd dated Bogota 2d January 1823." Thomas Todd "served on the United States supreme bench and was one of the best known lawyers and judges of his day. His second wife, Lucy Payne, was a sister of Dolly Madison and they were the first couple to be married in the White House" (Johnson, A History of Kentucky & Kentuckians). His son Charles served as Confidential Agent to various South American countries during their independence movements.
