Roosevelt Collection of Donald Scott Carmichael (booklabel to folding chemise). inscribed by president roosevelt to edwin corning, the winner of the groton school's junior debating team. Edwin Corning's father, a fellow Groton alum of the same name, was a gifted New York politician who was Lieutenant Governor of New York before his early death in 1934. Corning Sr.'s other son, Erastus, also attended Groton and was the long staying mayor of Albany, serving from 1942 to 1983. Edwin Jr. was born in 1919 and was never associated with politics. Another notable Groton alum, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was heavily influenced by the teachings of Endicott Peabody, the Episcopal priest that had founded the school for boys in 1888. Endicott was still teaching at Groton in 1938 and signed the bookplate placed inside this book and presented to the young Edwin Corning upon winning the debate. Roosevelt's inscription reads, "To Edwin Corning, Junior Debating Prize, Groton School - 1936, from Franklin D. Roosevelt."
