Title: The History of Don Quixote of the Mancha
Author: Cervantes, Miguel de Description: 4 volumes. Extra-illustrated with the insertion of 99 Platinotype plates by Frederick H. Evans after the 1866 Dalziel Brother's woodcuts of Arthur Boyd Houghton's illustrations. (8vo) 8x6, red half morocco and cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt.Additional title page (1913) and explanatory leaf for the privately printed suite of illustrations bound in Volume 1. In a manuscript notation on the explanatory leaf Evans has noted that only 3 sets of prints were produced and the negatives destroyed. The present set was Evans' own and each volume bears his 2 bookplates. Also laid in is an autograph letter, signed, from Charles Ricketts congratulating Evans on his work with these reproductions. Frederick H. Evans, bookseller and noted British photographer, is best known for his photographs of English and French cathedrals. Evans began his career as a bookseller, but retired from that to become a full-time photographer in 1898, when he adopted the platinotype technique for his photography. Platinotype images, with extensive and subtle tonal range, non glossy-images, and better resistance to deterioration than other methods available at the time, suited Evans' subject matter.
