First Edition.Presentation copy inscribed by the photographer to the printer on blank page facing the title, also inscribed by the introducer: "March 15, 1982, For David Gardner, Is a man who loves and values what he does, then does it beautifully. My congratulations, thanks and best wishes. Roy DeCarava. For David Gardner, Thank you for doing it the way it had to be done. Your work is beautiful. Sherry Turner DeCarava." Roy DeCarava, born in Harlem in 1919, became the first black artist to receive a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. He finds material for his photography on the streets and subways, in the parks and apartments of New York City. Added to the lot is the paperback edition, with the text block separated from the wrappers.
