Description: [14], ccclxxviii leaves. [fleuron]4, [Maltese cross]6, A4, B-V6, 2A-2P6, Q-T6, V-X8, Y-Z6, 3A-3T6, 3V8. Edited by William Thynne, who is named on [fleuron]2r; with additions, mostly spurious, by John Stow. With 23 woodcut illustrations; title-page with woodcut border; "The Caunterburie tales" and "The romaunt of the rose" each have separate divisional title with woodcut border, foliation and register are continuous; woodcut initials. (Folio) 12x8, 18th/early 19th century full vellum with gilt-roll borders, spine gilt, marbled endpapers.Rare, early, and significant edition of Chaucer's Works, the greatest of all medieval works of English literature and foundation of all that came after. Condition report

Some aging to vellum, front cover detached, as is the front free endpaper, flyleaf, and title-page; title-page backed with paper, small chip at top corner, old ink name crossed out in lower margin, light dampstain to lower margin of latter leaves, old ink notation (partially eradicated) to lower margin of fol. ccxcv, lower corner of fol. ccclxvii replaced affecting 22 lines of text, smaller portion of following leaf replaces affecting 4 lines of text; still a very nice copy, quite clean overall, in need of only fairly minor repair.
