Civil War letter. Written by a Confederate supporter to his brother less than a month after the first Bull Run. Handwritten Letter, 4 pages, 7 x 11", Stone House, So. Ca., Aug. 11, 1861. J.W. Young writes in part ,"..I am verry anxious that our Farther's reppetation and name should be kept up and as you have sons I trust they are in the defense of our southern confederacy." He explains to his brother that his own sons are too young to fight and "I am verry sorry I was not in the great Battle at Bulls Run. I should have been thare but for a sevear attack of pneunonia which kept me two months confined to my room." He talks about other people they both know: "Clark Youngs eldest son was killed dead in Hane(?) Regment with a cannonball which greaved me verry much." The letter has some fold breaks that have been reinforced with archival tape. And there is a quarter-inch hole on the third page affecting one word.
