Carte-de-visite Photo Signed, sepia toned, 2.25" X 4", backstamped "Published by E.&H.T. Anthony, / 501 Broadway, / New York./ from / Photographic Negative / in / Brady's / National Portrait Gallery". Written on verso in unknown hand, "Given by Gen _____/ to J. T Williams. / at City Point, Va. / Oct 1864." Paper remnants affixed to a portion of verso, not obstructing the backstamp. Signed, "U.S. Grant / Lt. Gen. U.S.A." CDV is lightly soiled with a very small tear along top edge and minor restoration mentioned only for accuracy. Overall, in very good condition.Earlier in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to Lieutenant General in the regular army - a rank not awarded since George Washington. When Ulysses S. Grant began the siege operation against Petersburg he selected City Point, Virginia, for his headquarters. City Point, a small port town located at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers (now named Hopewell), provided Grant with not only railroad and river access to various points along the front, but also good transportation and communication with Fort Monroe, Va. and Washington, D.C. His headquarters, initially in a tent, was located on the east lawn of Dr. Richard Epps' home, Appomattox Manor. In order to serve the Union army, two huge military installations were built-a supply depot, and the Depot Field Hospital. During that siege, City Point was one of the busiest ports in the world. It was from this site that Grant planned and organized the Siege of Petersburg, which ultimately helped bring about the end of the Civil War in Virginia. And, it was at City Point that President Lincoln, Grant, and key military leaders met to discuss how to reunify the country once the war was over. Many Colored Troops, twenty-two regiments, participated in and sacrificed their lives during the siege of Petersburg. At least three men named J. Williams were mustered in the 127th Regiment Infantry under Colonel Benjamin F. Tracy, all Privates, and were stationed at City Point in the fall of 1864. Company B: Joseph Williams, Company C: Joseph Williams, and Company G: John Williams. It is possible that one of these men was the recipient of this signed CDV.
