Description:

Created c. 1508-9, this early woodcut is from the series ‘The Small Passion’ printed on a fine laid paper.  A fine dark lifetime proof impression before the Latin text edition with thread margins, this work is monogrammed in the block ‘AD’ in the upper right.  The original wood block is in the British Museum, London. Recounting the scene of the Small Passion in which Christ completes his journey and thus enters the city of Jerusalem, this work by Albrecht Dürer vividly recreates Christ as he is welcomed by his followers.  Also known as “Palm Sunday,” Christ’s Entry Into Jerusalem is celebrated by Christians alike with decorative motifs adorned with palm fronds in reference to Christ’s reception into this town under the shade of palm leaves harvested by its townspeople.  This is an incredibly bold and stunning woodcut whose detail cannot be ignored.  Dürer has expressively created this scene using his signature, woodcutting and printing techniques which have been fine-tuned and exemplified in his manner of shading beneath the donkey, and decorative lines in the palm fronds and surrounding foliage.   Catalogue Raisonné & COA:

ABOUT THE FRAMING: Conservation framed with museum quality, archival materials, this work is float-mounted on linen in an ornate black and gold leaf frame.  The finely carved vegetal details of the Spanish-style moulding compliment linear elements in this work.  The bright gold reflection of light in the frame and the deep shadows created by the sculptural relief, accentuate the contrast in this work.  Completed with white, linen-wrapped mats and a matching gold inner fillet, this work is set behind an archival Plexiglas® cover.
