Description:Combining a studied look at the human form coinciding with an academic look at architecture, the intimate scale of this work entices the viewer to view the work up close. Full of wonderful line work and rich contrasting tones, the subject matter of this work is simultaneously dire and beautiful.
Created by the famed German Little Master, this work is printed on a fine laid paper. Monogrammed 'IH' with the artist's insignia above the initials in the lower left side of the image, this work is a wonderful dark impression with thread margins.
Depicting a scene focused on a man standing with his arm outstretched in a moment before striking another with his whip, the gracefulness of the form contrasts with the subject matter of the work. The kneeling figure is concealed with his arm wrapped around his head, yet his facial expression can clearly be imagined in this circumstance. Surrounding the two figures, architectural elements of arches, columns and distant buildings give hint to the time period in this piece. Set near the water, the mountains in the distance are designed from simple linear contours and sit below billowing clouds in the sky.
