Created in 1912, this woodcut is printed on a white Velin paper.  Fully documented in the artist’s Catalogue Raisonné, this impression is printed in an edition of 1200 from XXE Siècle publication created in 1938 (the total edition was 1545).  This work is monogrammed ‘K’ in the lower left hand side of the work.

Boldly designed with dark black lines and lively forms, this work allows the viewer to create their own interpretation of the abstract composition.  Exhibiting Kandinsky’s technical skill and mastery in this medium, this work evokes a sense of motion and activity.

Capturing the viewer’s attention through the use of energetic lines and shapes, this work depicts Kandinsky’s skill in manipulating the plate to form a striking image.  The use of varied sizes and shapes of black forms creates a sense of push and pull, actively engaging the eye through an impression of being led throughout the picture plane.  Imaginative and playful shapes coincide with the familiar, allowing the viewer to use their imagination and invent their own narrative for this work.

About the Framing:
Conservation framed with archival materials and museum quality, this work is set in a light wood and gold speckled frame.  The shadows created when light hits the moulding accentuate the contrast in this print.
