Picasso, Pablo, Original Ceramic Madoura Sculpture

Please Visit Our Website for More Information

Artist: Picasso, Pablo (1881 - 1973)
Title: Bird Under the Sun, 1952
Medium: Ceramic Madoura bowl
Image Size: 5.7 in (14.5 cm)
Framed Size: 18.5 in x 18.5 in (47 cm x 47 cm)
Signature: This work is stamped 'Edition Picasso,' and glazed 'Edition Picasso,' on the reverse
Edition: From the edition of 500
Description:

Georges Bloch stated of Picasso’s ceramic works, ‘…in approach, material and technique is as novel as it is interesting.  Pottery, gleaming white discs with relief designs, monochrome or brightly coloured ovals, dishes and even jugs and vases here serve as bearers of compositions whose themes express the joyous, life-loving side of Picasso’s work.  They are printed from blocks and stamps fashioned by the master over a period of more than twenty years in the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris.” (Bloch 7)   Exhibiting his love of experimenting with various art media, this piece is rendered with strong contrast and lyrical figurative elements.  Set on a brilliantly glazed white background, the bird and sun silhouettes evoke a sense of motion and activity that is best experienced in person.

Created in 1952, this ceramic bowl was created with white earthenware clay, oxidized paraffin decoration, and white enamel.  From an edition of 500, this work is stamped ‘Edition Picasso’ and also glazed ‘Edition Picasso’ on the reverse side of the work.

Catalogue Raisonné & COA:
It is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that I will enclose with the sale of the work) :

1) Ramié, Alain. Picasso: Catalogue of the edited ceramic works 1947-1971, Galerie Madoura: Vallauris, 1988. Listed and illustrated as catalogue raisonné no. 174 on pg 95.

2) Masterworks Fine Art, Inc. Certificate of Authenticity accompanies this work.

About the Framing:
This resplendent custom frame is the perfect, elegant compliment to this remarkable work. Framing begins with linen-wrapped wooden liners that securely hold the ceramic and allow visibility in the back (to view markings) . An elegant varnished gold leaf frame encases the wood liners to create a shadow-box affect against a black background. The delicate coloration of the wood moulding perfectly compliments the gentle texture and color within the clay. A heavy weight picture wire is also attached to the frame to ensure a secure hanging. Due to the size and weight of this piece, we recommend using a heavy duty double nail hook with 100-150 pound weight capacity (double the weight of the piece to determine hook capacity) .

Style: 20th Century Modern Art, Modern Artist, Cubism, Cubist
