1869 STERLING SILVER SEWING ETUI VINAIGRETTE

An egg shaped pendant with hinged lift top that opens to reveal a matching tape measure surrounded by a holder for straight pins. The tape measure is an interesting egg-shaped mechanical piece that retracts the cloth measure with the turning of the top stem. Hallmarks are stamped inside the lid and on the seat of the lid on the body. The maker's mark is TJ, town is London, date is 1869-70, lion passant confirms sterling silver. The bottom compartment opens to a gilt interior with vinaigrette grille over sponge, hallmarks inside that cover as well. Measures 2 x 1.25 inches.

Excellent, complete, tight clasp and hinge, no monogram or engraving, the cloth tape measure is fragile and deteriorating.
