with bonnet top, dense mahogany with poplar, white pine, chestnut and red cedar secondary, bonnet top upper case with paneled pediment and two figured mahogany panel doors opening to fitted interior over two candle slides, lower case with fallboard opening to shell-carved and fitted interior, six block-front drawers and four valance drawers all with red cedar secondary, shell-carved prospect door opening to three interior drawers, interior till, lopers with original bird figural brass mounts, original brass batwing carrying handles, Goddard Townsend School, Newport, Rhode Island, 1760-1780, 97 (94 in. without finial) x 43-1/2 x 24-1/2 in. Refinished and restored (label on back of case "Restored by Stanley Jameson, Blauvelt, New York, 1964"), replaced finial and finial plinth, bookcase interior with four added shelves, brasses, feet and and base molding replaced, most original hinges and other hardware, backboards renailed and one replaced, face patches to fallboard and writing board at hinges, two small interior drawers with replaced bottoms, fallboard with cracks, scattered patches to thumb moldings on fallboard and drawer facings, other scattered restorations to moldings and secondary surfaces. Provenance: Bought in 1950 from the Mitchell family of Tuxedo Park, New York; Private Collection, Winter Park, Florida A related desk signed by John Goddard is illustrated in Sack, [American Antiques,] Vol. VII, page 1790.
