Japanese Hakata Figure of Gosho Ningyo c. 1950

Charming figure of a boy holding a goldfish is a Japanese hand-painted clay Hakata figure known as a Gosho Ningyo, or Court Doll. The Hakata Ningyo, or "Hakata Doll", is a traditional Japanese clay doll, originally from the city of Fukuoka, part of which was previously named Hakata before the city merger in 1889. This example, made c. 1950, includes a maker's mark on the bottom painted in Japanese characters and a low black rectangular painted-wood base.
Dimensions: Figure with stand, approximately 9-1/4"H; stand, 9-1/2"W x 7"D
Condition: On figure, occasional soiling, old splashes of white paint to area of fish and barrel; on base, some scratching, 2 small chips to painted edge.
