[Ephemera] Bishop, Washington Irving. Spiritualism & Its Professors On Trial. Handsome 8 ¼ x 10 ½" bi-fold program advertising Bishop's appearance at St. James's Hall, London, ca. 1881. Black ink on cream-colored stock. Lists Bishop's program (including "Spirit Rapping" and "The Floating Table"), as well as extracts and reviews from the press. Scrapbook remnants on rear and one tear affecting some interior text, otherwise good condition. Scarce. A mentalist of great reputation, Bishop had worked with Anna Eva Fay and as an assistant to John Randall Brown before striking out on his own as an entertainer and debunker. Throughout his life, Bishop claimed to be subjected to occasional cataleptic fits. Upon his unexpected death at age 33, his mother claimed he had been autopsied while not yet dead.
