19th C. PENN. FOLK ART ADAM & EVE PENMANSHIP

Sign In to see what this sold for

A work of penmanship in ink and watercolor on paper by Zachariah Reynolds of Washington County, Pennsylvania. This depiction of Adam and Eve in The Garden is on a 12 x 15.5 inch sheet of laid paper with an unclear watermark. It comes from a group of twenty works that recently surfaced in the possession of Reynolds' descendants and is signed on the reverse three times with the dates of May 25th, 1812, Sept 21st, 1814 and November 29th 1814, Washington County. It has been folded down to a size of 10 x 8 inches and has two additional drawings of rearing horses on the reverse. Zachariah Reynolds was well known for his natural abilities of penmanship. Around 1813 he executed a series of ink and watercolor charts of the internal organs for Dr. Leatherman, of Houstonville, Pennsylvania (see lot 46).

Condition report

Very good, not laid down, no damage or noticeable staining beyond a light mat burn, folded.
