An unsigned work of penmanship in ink on paper by Zachariah Reynolds of Washington County, Pennsylvania. This image was copied from a popular etching of the same title by Amos Doolittle, published circa 1814 by the Connecticut firm of Shelton and Kensett. This political cartoon outlines Bonaparte's predicament at the time with the various nations of Europe represented by their mascots: the Russian Bear, the English Lion, the Confederate Eagles of Austria, etc. It was executed on a 12.5 x 15.5 inch sheet of paper and is unsigned. This work is from a group of twenty works that recently surfaced in the possession of Zachariah Reynolds' descendants, including many signed works. An affidavit of provenance from these descendants accompanies this piece. A very similar image in watercolor is found on page 223 of AMERICAN FOLK PAINTINGS FROM THE ABBY ALDRICH ROCKEFELLER FOLK ART CENTER, 1988. This work is firmly attributed to Zachariah Reynolds by its descent through his family and the body of works it was found with.
Condition reportThe unmounted sheet previously folded in quarters, thus weakened and two tears at edge fold lines, a few edge chips, otherwise very good, sturdy, reasonably clean and unstained.
