Josef Sigall (1891 - 1953) Born in Brody, Poland on May 18, 1891. Sigall was educated in Vienna and was a gold medalist at the Royal Art Academy during 1909-15. In Europe he painted nearly all contemporary monarchs including King George VI. He lived in South America before he came to the U.S. in 1922. He painted portraits of Presidents Coolidge, Hoover, Roosevelt, their families and cabinets, as well as numerous Hollywood celebrities. He moved to Los Angeles in1926 and then north to Saratoga in 1930 where he owned a 70-acre estate. He later returned to Los Angleles and made trips to the Mojave Desert to paint Indian scenes. Sigall died while vacationing in La Jolla, CA on Sept. 16, 1953.This portrait is of Sigalls good friend, fellow countrywoman, and Hollywood Silent Movie starlet, Pola Negri.
