GEORGE CLYMER. Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania.
Fr. PA-126. Province of Pennsylvania. June 18, 1764. Twenty Shillings. Plate B. "Printed by B. FRANKLIN" Issue, Signed by George Clymer. Fine. This note has some deft overall conservation and sealed centerfold edge splits. The margins are tight and the text is relatively well centered, on both the face and back. There is greater wear about the centerfold. The serial number and three signatures are complete and readable. They include, G. Roberts, George Clymer and Jonathan Hughs, Jr. The middle signature is written in medium tan ink "G Clymer" and is very clear. His signature is very rare and is only found on this issue of Colonial Pennsylvania currency. We have only offered three notes with Clymer's signature in over a decade. This finest example was offered in our auction of August 27, 2005, Lot 573, graded Choice VF and selling for $4,130. This historic and very rare signature is missing from most collections and is an interesting example of when the signature is significantly more valuable than the note itself.
