Heading for 'The Knave of Hearts', youth talking to a frog, signed, dated and titled verso: Maxfield Parrish Windsor: Vermont 1924, oil on board, 9.25'' x 20'', est:$125,000/175,000. Note: 'The Knave of Hearts'' by Louise Sanders was published in 1925 by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York and is widely considered one of Parrish's most lavishly illustrated works. Parrish produced 26 paintings for the publication including the present work. Provenance: Gift of the artist to Susan Lewin (see verso inscription); Vose Galleries, Boston, MA (see verso label); Marian Jergens Flower Kelly, acquired from the above 1960s; by descent in the family to the present owner, Private Collection, Santa Barbara, CA, 1994
Condition reportVisual: Very fine, stable craquelure throughout. Evidence of varnish yellowing in the sky with a few scattered spots of stain. A spot where varnish is missing on the foliage in the left center quadrant, a tiny dot of loss to the right of the figure and a dot of paint on the varnish surface along the upper left edge. Artist painted black border along the four painted edges. Blacklight: No evidence of touch-up under blacklight.
