(8vo) 7x4½, rebound in modern woven cloth.The best account, of the early discoveries of the Portuguese. First collective edition of all the Decades of Barros and Couto. Contains the fullest historical account of the voyages and conquests of the Portuguese in the East, including Africa, Brazil, etc. Barros, who is one of the most correct and classical of Portuguese writers, is universally esteemed as a historian. He was born about 1496 and died at the age of 74. Couto was the chronicler and chief Keeper of the Archives of Torre do Tombo at Goa, India, where he died in 1616. The histories of Cabral (the discoverer of Brazil), Vasco de Gama, the Albuquerques, Tristan da Cunha, are all fully treated by the most competent Portuguese historian, who had all the Archives of the Indies at his disposal. Comprises Decades 1 to 4 of Barros (8 vols); Life of Barros, by Severim de Faria, and table to the four Decades (1 vol); Couto's continuation of the 4th Decade, together with Decades 5 to 12 of Couto (14 vols), index to Couto's Decades (1 vol), making 24 volumes.
