Early English edition of Don Quixote 1620

Sign In to see what this sold for

Title: [Don Quixote in English, i.e. The history of Don-Quichote. The first parte]
Author: Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de
Description: [24], 572, [4] pp. ¶4 (-¶1), A-Oo8. (4to) disbound but text block still together, rear board present but detached.Second edition in English of the first part of Don Quixote, quite rare, following the even more rare first edition of 1612, and published around the time of the first edition of the second part, 1620, although the date of this printing is conjectured by ESTC. This copy lacks the engraved title, with a later ink manuscript one made up, with the date given as 1612. However, the 1612 edition had 594 numbered pages, as collated by ESTC, whereas this second edition has 572. Nine leaves are supplied from another copy; these are laid in loose. After the ms. title-page the first leaf is ¶2, the first page of the 2-page dedication, followed by the preface, sonnets and table of contents. The main text, which begins with signature B, is complete. Realistically, the earliest obtainable English language edition of the first part of Don Quixote.
