Newcomb plaque, satyrs, Nicholson, firi
Description
Rare Newcomb College high glaze plaque deeply carved and painted by Leona Nicholson, circa 1900. The scene is of two satyrs playing wind instruments under an exaggerated moon and stars. The blue and light green background colors have a slight luster effect. Incised marks on the back include the Newcomb logo with the letters H and B on either side indicating a hand built piece, the artist's initials, the letter M which may indicate a mold was taken from this original and other marks which we do not understand. Size is 7 by 8 1/2 inches. Two firing cracks extend from the bottom edge to the middle of the plaque. There are edge chips covered by the new oak frame and glaze chips to the horns of one of the satyrs.
