GEORGE RODRIGUE (American b. 1944)
Blue Dog With Flower Pot Oil on canvas 36 x 48 in. Signed lower left Hailing from New Iberia, Louisiana, Cajun artist George Rodrigue is now world-famous for his Blue Dog series. Rodrigue displayed an early talent for art, and he studied at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and in Los Angeles at the Art Center College of Design. For a time, Rodrigue painted in an Abstract Expressionist manner, but soon returned to painting scenes which reflected his Cajun culture, including paintings based on folk tales and bayou and swamp landscapes. People magazine has dubbed Rodrigue's Blue Dog paintings "the hottest fad in popular art since Walter Keane's big-eyed waifs in the 1960s." Well known celebrities such as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Whoopi Goldberg are among the fervent collectors of Blue Dogs. Through his vibrant paintings, Rodrigue has transformed his beloved, long-deceased childhood pet, Tiffany, from a frisky black and white-furred terrier/spaniel into Blue Dog. With these hugely popular works, Rodrigue strives to capture the back-and-forth of both man and beast as they strive for true communication with a level of understanding that goes beyond their differences. This wonderful Blue Dog painting is sure to speak to any fan of Rodrigue's sublime canine companion.
